If you wish to study Japanese in Japan long-term, you need to apply for a Certificate of Eligibility for a Student Visa through a Japanese language school.
There are various requirements set by the Immigration Bureau for the Certificate of Eligibility, and one of these requirements, Japanese language study history, has been updated.
When Did the Requirement Change?
The change took effect in November 2024, and it will apply to all students planning to enroll from the April 2025 term onward.
What Were the Previous Requirements?
Previously, except for certain countries, individuals who had graduated from higher education institutions in their home country were allowed to apply for a Certificate of Eligibility without any prior Japanese language study history.
What Are the New Requirements?
Regardless of nationality or educational background, individuals whose primary purpose is to study Japanese must now provide proof of Japanese language study at the time of application.
The following documents must be submitted (self-study or planned study hours before enrollment are not accepted):
- Proof of Passing a Japanese Language Exam
There are several exams recognized by the Immigration Bureau, including the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).

This can be obtained through an educational institution such as a high school, university, or Japanese language school in your home country, as well as private lessons or online courses. You must complete a minimum of 150 hours of Japanese study and obtain an official certificate of completion.
Why Is Japanese Language Study Required Before Coming to Japan?
The requirement for Option 1 (exam proof) or Option 2 (150-hour proof) aims to evaluate the applicant’s commitment and motivation to study in Japan.
The approximate time required to pass the JLPT N5 level is said to be around 150 hours of study.
